Meet the Maker: Marlissa of Mai Lin

------------ ------------ ------------------------ ------------------------
Why do you love what you do for a living?
I get to make little tokens of love and gratitude every day. Even though it’s small, I get to have a tiny part in something really beautiful.
What is your favourite part of your job?
Hands down it’s the people I’ve met through my business. It goes so far beyond the job, but it’s absolutely the best part.
How did you decide this is what you wanted to do?
I always imagined having a job where I could make things every day. I went to a design school and even though I didn’t know specifically what I wanted to do, I knew I wanted to use my education to create a job I loved.
When did you know this was what you wanted to do?
You know, it was a moment. I was taking the morning off from school and I went downtown for some inspiration. I bought a roll of silk and one container of beads. I visited a friend at her apartment at queen and spadina and made my first bracelet while I sat on her sofa. I didn’t have any plans to sell it, I just made it for myself but it felt really good. Looking back, that was the first moment in a series of events that led to today.
If you could do anything else, what would it be?
I would either go to culinary school or create a job where I could visit textile studios all over the world.
Who inspires you?
Moms everywhere.
Do you have a mentor?
I receive mentor ship from many different small business owners.
What is it they provide to you that you value?
The community of women led business in Ontario is incredible and provides so much support, good advice and love.
What’s next for you and your business?
Next month, I’ll be celebrating 8 years of Mai Lin Jewelry. I’ve been taking a break from shows (I had a baby last October) so this year I’m hoping to get back so I can see more of you amazing people in person.
